GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIP

How to create member commitment and strong cooperatives?
Governance is the heart and motor of cooperatives. That is why Agriterra has developed a training programme on Cooperative Governance. In a few days participants gain all relevant knowledge on good governance within a cooperative or an organisation. We use a Governance Health Check, a useful instrument developed by Agriterra. Governance also includes workshops and training on member commitment, youth, female leadership and HR issues.

Description

Agriterra’s Youth in Agribusiness programme comprising a variety of possible activities to involve youth. We work with agricultural cooperatives and farmer’s organisations to support them in enhancing youth participation. Every trajectory starts with an intake to collect crucial information about the starting point of the organisation. After the intake you normally start with the Kick-off Workshop Youth, which helps to start creating space for youth, if the youth group shows some effort into realising their action plans we will help them  to reach a next level.

The Kick-Off Youth Workshop is the first step to develop a mutual focus and create space for young potentials to start youth activities/groups/projects. A couple of months after the kick-off Youth workshop we expect the business advisor to go to the cooperative and talk directly to the youth group about their progress. Normally we see many groups undertaking action, creating youth councils, projects and possibilities for youngsters to become a farmer. At the same time there are many challenges.

That’s why we bring groups together in Follow-up Youth Workshop to work on next steps, which helps to generate new ideas, energy and action. In the follow-up, we aim to exchange results, challenges and ideas between the different youth groups. The participants will also learn more about cooperatives, youth councils/groups and coop alliances. Besides they will have a field trip or learn from external speakers (inspiring farmers and projects), so they have a lot of inspiration to create a plan and focus for the next 6 months.

After this we see youth groups are starting to head in different direction, that’s why the next step(s) is Tailormade Youth Workshops, which Youth trainers can organise as often as they see opportunities, it is necessary and there is budget. Possible content can be manure making, business planning, marketing, sustainable farming etc. Inspiration for the content comes from all Agriterra trainings and all needs from the youth groups. For specific subjects we hire experts to give workshops or presentations.

After this event, we offer to the most dynamic youth a Youth Leadership Masterclass where they learn about facilitative leadership, personal challenges, guiding groups and take field trips for creating a broader network. This masterclass can take place in one of Agriterra's operating countries, including the Netherlands. There will be a selection process in which maximum of two participants from each country will be chosen. The Youth Leadership Masterclasses can also be organized in the region or country if there is funding available.

In most of the trainings we mainly work with the youth, but also want to keep the board members and managers close, because they really need each other and have to be able to understand each other’s path and choices.
